District launches Springs Dashboard

The Northwest Florida Water Management District launched its Springs Dashboard today to provide hydrologic data and updated information on springs restoration projects in northwest Florida.

The Dashboard organizes projects by each of the first magnitude springs groups in northwest Florida and contains brief summaries of each project. Users can zoom in or out on the map for each spring’s contribution area to see the location of each project. The map also features layers that can be turned on and off to display things such as boat ramps, recreation sites, and contribution area boundaries.

The Dashboard also contains current hydrologic data for each major springs group as well links for Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) plans and Minimum Flows and Minimum Water Levels (MFL) for each springs group. (Though the Dashboard is optimized for viewing on mobile devices, the charts and graphs displaying hydrologic data are best viewed on a table or computer.)

Tropical Storm Ida Update

With Tropical Storm Ida approaching landfall, the District is closing day-use and campsites in the western region of northwest Florida. This includes all day-use and camping sites in Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties. Those campsites are: Bluff Springs, Williams Lake, Mystic Springs, Keyser Landing, Webb Landing, and Cotton Lake.

Please check the District's website for updates about recreation site closures that could impact your reservation. When District recreation sites are reopened, it will be noted on the website.

Tropical Storm Claudette Update

Following the landfall of Tropical Storm Claudette, the Northwest Florida Water Management District will re-open all but four recreation sites and reservation campsites beginning today (June 22nd).

The following locations are still closed:

  • Lost Lake
  • Bluff Springs
  • Williams Lake
  • Cotton Lake
  • Otto Hill (closed for routine maintenance)

Potential Tropical Cyclone #3 Update

In anticipation of heavy rains associated with Potential Tropical Cyclone #3, the Northwest Florida Water Management District is closing all recreation sites and reservation campsites located west of the Apalachicola River effective at 5:00 PM today (June 18th).

District moves forward with innovative technology to restore, protect springs

HAVANA – The Northwest Florida Water Management District and its partners have begun implementing an Innovative Technology project that will capture and remove harmful algae from Lake Munson.

The project utilizes a mobile algal harvesting unit that will remove intact cellular algae and associated nutrients from Lake Munson, improving water quality within the lake and helping reduce nutrient enrichment within the Wakulla Spring groundwater contribution area.

The project received more than $1.9 million for a Harmful Algal Bloom Innovative Technology grant from the Department of Environmental Protection through the Blue-Green Algae Task Force established in 2019 by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“The District is excited to learn how applying this technology to Lake Munson will not only improve water quality on the lake but how it may help Wakulla Spring,” said District Governing Board member Kellie Ralston, who represents Leon and Wakulla counties. “This is the type of creativity and innovation we need to explore as we address water quality issues throughout northwest Florida.”

The algae harvesting unit was deployed at Lake Munson in early May. The system is designed to collect water from the lake, separate and remove the algae, and then return clean water directly to the lake. The unit can process as much as 700 gallons of water per minute, or 1 million gallons per 24 hours.

“The protection and restoration of Wakulla Spring is not going to happen with just one project,” said State Sen. Loranne Ausley, who represents 11 counties, including Leon and Wakulla. “It’s important we approach this from multiple angles and exploring the use of this type of technology in Lake Munson can provide another tool for our long-term strategy at Wakulla Spring.”

In addition to removing algae from the lake, the project calls for water quality data collection and the evaluation of water quality, sediment, and hydrologic data. Additional modeling to analyze nutrient flux from sediments and water column will also be conducted.

“The innovative technology being used in this project could potentially be used in lakes and waterbodies throughout karst-sensitive areas,” said State Rep. Allison Tant, who represents part of Leon County. “It’s a testament to the scientists at the water management district and DEP for looking for creative methods to address the nutrient loading into our springs.”

Lake Munson is a 255-acre lake south of Tallahassee which discharges to a sinkhole leading to Wakulla Spring. The lake has a history of water quality and ecological degradation. Four waterbodies are expected to benefit from this algae-harvesting project: Lake Munson, Munson Slough, the Upper Wakulla River, and Wakulla Spring.

“Safeguarding our water quality is truly a team effort, from our partners at the State of Florida, to the County’s in-field experts, to the citizens we serve,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Rick Minor. “Our water is an important resource, encompassing life, beauty and recreation. I am very proud of the County’s commitment to environmental stewardship, and this innovative project is another step on that journey.”

The results from the project will support an evaluation of how well the harvesting system reduces the nutrient load in Lake Munson, and whether the technology can be applied to similar karst-influenced lakes in the region.

This novel process helps turn back the clock on impacted waterways, prevent future outbreaks, and support an environmentally sustainable industry – a truly comprehensive solution to combat this growing crisis.”

District to close Econfina Creek canoe launch June 17 for one-day repairs

The Northwest Florida Water Management District is closing the Econfina Creek Canoe/Kayak Launch near Highway 20 for one day for repairs. The site will be closed Thursday, June 17, and will re-open Friday, June 18.

District acquires conservation easement to help protect the Chipola River

HAVANA – The Governing Board for the Northwest Florida Water Management District finalized a conservation easement that will help provide long-term protection for the Chipola River.

The 622.79-acre parcel is located in Jackson County south of Interstate 10 and slightly west of Highway 73. The property is within the contribution area for the Chipola River with frontage along Dry Creek. It is adjacent to a 388.10-acre conservation easement the District acquired in 2020.

“The Chipola River plays a vital role in the economy and quality of life for residents in Jackson County,” said George Roberts, Chairman of the District’s Governing Board. “The District shares the vision of Governor DeSantis, the legislature, and the Department of Environmental Protection to protect the Chipola River and its associated springs and tributaries along with all of the precious natural resources in northwest Florida.”

The District’s Governing Board approved acquiring the conservation easement December 17, 2020 following two separate appraisals. A legislative appropriation through DEP for springs protection provided the $224,204.90 for the acquisition.

“This is another opportunity to protect the wildlife, the environment, and the Chipola River and I appreciate the work done by the water management district to secure this conservation easement,” said State Sen. George Gainer, who represents Jackson County. “This acquisition helps ensure the Chipola River will remain one of Florida’s most beautiful rivers.”

“The Chipola River is one of our area’s most beautiful treasures and ensuring its long-term health is a tremendous source of accomplishment,” said State Rep. Brad Drake, who represents Jackson County. “Protecting the Chipola means we have to make sure the water flowing into the river is healthy, which is why acquisitions of land within its contribution area are so important.”

Gov. DeSantis appoints three to District’s Governing Board

TALLAHASSEE — Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Jerome “Jerry” Pate, Anna Upton, and John Alter to the Northwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board.

Jerome “Jerry” Pate

Pate, of Pensacola, is the owner of Jerry Pate Turf and Irrigation and Jerry Pate Design. He is a former professional golfer with 15 professional wins including the 1976 U.S. Open and the 1982 Players Championship. He was also a member of the winning 1981 United States Ryder Cup Team. Pate currently serves as Vice Chair of the Northwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board and on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Foundation Board of Directors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in administrative science from the University of Alabama.

Anna Upton

Upton, of Tallahassee, is a Managing Member of Anna H. Upton, P.L. and serves as General Counsel to The Everglades Foundation. She has been named a Super Lawyers Rising Star in the areas of business litigation, civil litigation defense, employment and labor law and environmental litigation. A recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award, she earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Wake Forest University and her juris doctor from Stetson University College of Law.

John Alter

Alter, of Malone, manages a family-run tree farm and is a retired Naval Aviator, earning an honorable discharge from the United States Navy at the rank of Captain. He has previously served on the Northwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board and is also a member of the Florida Forestry Association, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the Optimist Club of Northeast Jackson County. Alter earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and his master’s degree in political science from Villanova University.  These appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.
